Blackjack Rules
The object of Blackjack is to accumulate cards that total 21 or as close as possible without going over. Face cards (Jacks, Queens and Kings) are the value of 10. Aces are set at 1 or 11 and the other cards are represented by their number. If the player and the house tie, nobody wins. If you are dealt ace and 10 then this is an automatic win, unless there is a tie.
The rules may be relatively easy but before you can become a champion you need to develop a deep understanding ins and outs of the game and also casino protocol.
The Blackjack table is for 5 – 7 players. If there's an empty seat at a table then you may take your place and it is usually okay to join mid play (unless there is a sign advising otherwise).
Go for a nearly full table, so that you’ll have a relatively long game and therefore more time to think!
So you’ve got your chips sorted? – buy these from the dealer. Do not hand your money to the dealer, lay your cash on the table so as to keep up with etiquette! AND most importantly do not cash in more than than you can afford!
The chips – colour coded (most are standard)
Check for house rules although there are only a few variations you need to be sure what you are playing to stand a chance. Sometimes a small card on the table will explain for you but alternatively you can ask the dealer to confirm them for you. If you don’t ask you’ll never know for sure!
Variable Rules
A soft hand is any hand that counts an ace as 11. This is soft as the ace can automatically become a 1 if you are going to bust! Easy?
Surrendering is where you can give in your hand at the cost of just half your bet. If you have a bad hand then this could prevent you from losing the full amount? Handy! There are also early and late surrenders. If you are early you could be off the hook yet if you are late it may not be permitted. Make sure you keep on top of the timing of the game.
A split hand is allowed when you are dealt two cards of equal value and you are permitted to play these cards separately.
Even money allows you to cash in your bet straight away at 1:1 payout ratio. This applies when you are dealt 21 and the dealers only showing card is an ace.
Hard hands are without an ace or with ace as the value of 1 only.
Dealing
Cards can come face up or face down. It doesn't really matter. You can pick the cards up if you like but only use one hand.
So your cards are on the table, good luck!
