According to a recent BBC article a university student has devised a computer programme that can monitor Blackjack tables so closely that it can detect card counters and dealer errors.  This very clever computer can watch the dealer and assess the decisions made on the table.

Counting cards is used by some gamblers to try predict the upcoming cards. This is done by close analysis of cards already played and developing mathematical systems. Although card counting is not illegal it can often result in action being taken against those that are suspected of such behaviour.

A recent film, 21, tells a story of card counting in casinos for huge profit. This film suggests that card counting involves clever and cunning planning. It also shows that card counting could be attached to organisations and that it also carries with it huge risks.

Strategy used to determine probability offers huge advantages to gamblers. The basic principles which are behind card counting are easily accessible to the public and rely on the values of the cards in Blackjack. These ideas may not be new or secret but still currently pose threats to the casino industry. An individual willing to attempt counting cards has to be observant and vigilant perhaps much like the proposed opposition; a computer.

The student, from Dundee, has designed a computer system that could put a stop to card counting at Blackjack tables, which could potentially be a major development for casinos. The system is already attracting worldwide attention and will be presented at the International Conference on Computer Vision Systems later this month.

With card counting presented as a sure fire way to beat the Casinos is it surprising that a possible solution would be highly prized?
